How the anti-dandruff shampoo works

Dandruff appears when the scalp sheds faster than usual. Malassezia yeasts, which thrive on an oily scalp, often play a part. That is why the shampoo combines ingredients that act on dandruff and on its unpleasant symptoms:

• Octopirox (piroctone olamine) is an anti-dandruff active ingredient. It limits the growth of yeasts on the scalp and, with it, flaking and itching.
• Birch leaf extract soothes the scalp and helps regulate sebum production.
• Menthol pleasantly cools the scalp and relieves the feeling of itching.
• Panthenol and hydrolysed keratin condition the hair, leaving it soft and shiny after washing.

Who the shampoo is for

The shampoo is intended for women and men who have dandruff and hair that gets oily quickly. If your scalp is sensitive, we recommend monitoring how your skin tolerates it, as the shampoo contains parfum and linalool.

Oily or dry dandruff?

Oily dandruff flakes are larger and yellowish, and they stick to the scalp and to hair that gets oily quickly. Dry dandruff flakes are small and white and fall easily from the hair, and the scalp tends to feel tight. Dr. Sandra Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is intended mainly for oily dandruff and a scalp prone to oiliness. For a tight, dry or very dry scalp, a gentler and more moisturising formula may be more suitable.

How often to use it and when you will see results

When dandruff is active, use the shampoo regularly, as often as needed, even with every hair wash if your scalp tolerates it well. Once the dandruff subsides, you can use it less often or alternate it with a regular shampoo. The effect is assessed after several weeks of regular use.

How to choose an anti-dandruff shampoo

• Active ingredient: cosmetic anti-dandruff shampoos use, for example, piroctone olamine (Octopirox). Ketoconazole is found in medicated shampoos. Zinc pyrithione is not permitted in cosmetic products in the EU.
• Type of dandruff: for oily dandruff and hair that gets oily quickly, choose a different shampoo from the one for a dry, tight scalp.
• Scalp sensitivity: if your scalp itches or stings, check whether the shampoo contains ingredients you react to, for example fragrances.

When to see a dermatologist

If the dandruff does not subside even after several weeks of regular washing, or if red patches, thick scales, oozing or hair loss appear on the scalp, make an appointment with a dermatologist. Such symptoms may be related to seborrhoeic dermatitis or psoriasis, which require a professional examination.
